150 political, human right and green movement activists condemned recent death penalties in Iran.
JARAS: Notwithstanding its grim record and the ongoing issuance of unjust sentences through inequitable trials, the Judiciary in Iran continues its goal to affiliate all critics and opponents of the regime to organizations it views as enemies of the state, with the goal to prevent any and all efforts to defend the rights of the citizens of Iran.
The defense of the freedom of speech and expression and fighting for human rights from a humane point of view, is the duty of all freedom seekers. Human right efforts , including the fight against executions, should be void of any political positioning and party affiliations. Death sentences [in Iran] are issued through unfair trials held in secret courts and behind closed doors, without the presence of defense attorneys and in the absence of an impartial jury consisting of individuals representing public opinion. These legal proceedings are not only unfair and contradictory to the principles of human rights, but are also inconsistent with the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, resulting in a humanitarian catastrophe.
The death sentences against a number of political prisoners have unfortunately been sent to the Execution of Sentences Circuit and as a result 6 political prisoners in Iran now face imminent risk of execution. Cyber activists have also been targeted through similar unfair and illegal judicial tactics, the charges against them and the sentences rendered highly questionable to say the least.
The signatories of this letter strongly condemn the issuance of the inhumane and unfair death sentences by an oppressive, unjust and partial judiciary; a judiciary that in lieu of acting as seekers of justice has now itself becomes the greatest source of injustice.
We the signatories of this letter condemn the death sentences of Saeed Malekpour, Mohsen Daneshpour Moghadam, Gholam Reza Khosravi Savadjani, Abdolreza Ghanbari, Ahmad Daneshpour Moghadam, Ali Zahed and Hamid Ghasemi.
We demand that the death sentences issued against the aforementioned political prisoners be overturned and ask that the charges against them be retried, in the presence of their legal counsel and though a fair and transparent judicial process.
